Top Tips For Your First Travel Nurse Contract!

Top Tips For Your First Travel Nurse Contract!

Finally you've started your first nursing contract! How unbelievably exciting! After years of contracting experience we have currated some of our top tips when starting your travel nursing adventure!

Tip 1

Start regional and go rural/remote!

Starting to rural is a common mistake new travel nurses make. Start in a larger regional centre and learn what it's like to work in the Australian healthcare setting or what it's like to work with good support around you. Then progressively go on contracts that don't have back up resources like an ICU which will push you to enhance your clinical decision making. If you're feeling confident then perhaps its time to go more rural where it's just a handful of nurses and an oncall doctor. Then if you're really keen to push your limits then head towards remote nursing posts where it's you and just you!

Tip 2

Prioritise your mental health

This cannot be understated how important this is! Be sure to keep active, go to social events, connect with the other nurses and new community, keep in contact with friends and family back home.

If you ever feel like your mental health is not doing great, you must reach out to a trained professional or someone you trust!

CRANAplus has a free 24/7 365 day telephone support line for all rural and remote nurses with trained psychologists. Their number is 1800805391

Tip 3

Engage with the community!

Remember you are only in town for a short time period. Get out and explore the local community, community events, and local sights! Make the most of your travelling but always remember to be safe!

Tip 4

Keep active!

Be it running, walking, lifting weights or just genuinely keeping your brain sharp. It is important that you do things outside of your work schedule. Pick up a new instrument, learn a new language, start crotchet, or even start a new hobby! Whatever you do, use that down time to do things you enjoy!

Tip 5

Don't settle for the first agency!

Shop around and figure out what is the best agency for you. There are many agencies with their own individual benefits so seek out the one that caters for your travel nursing dream. Ask around and do not be too quick to settle on one agency.
