All the legal things
There is no doubt there is a myriad of extra paperwork that you need to get completed to sign onto your first contract! Keep in mind that some states within Australia may have extra paperwork compared to others. Find out what you need to complete below!
The breakdown
1️⃣ Qualifications
- You'll need proof of your nursing bachelors, post graduate certificate, advanced study etc.
- These will have to be certified by a Justice of the Peace
2️⃣ National Police Check
- This is a criminal background check conducted by the Australian Federal Police
- This can easily be done online on the Australian Federal Police Website
3️⃣ Australian Health Practioners Regulatory Authority
- Also known as AHPRA
- This is a legal requirement for you to have to commence work as a health practitioner in Australia
- This can easily be done online on the AHPRA website
4️⃣ Passport and Working Rights
- If you are an Australian citizen with an Australian passport, you don't need to worry about this section
- If you are a New Zealand citizen with a New Zealand passport, your working visa is directly and automatically applied to your passport
- If you are from elsewhere in the world you may need to apply for a special working visa. Consult with your agency for more information
5️⃣ Identification
- You'll need at least 3 identification documents certified by a Justice of the Peace. Two of the identification documents must be photo identification
- Be sure to take your original documents with you to be certified
6️⃣ References
- For references, you'll need at least two line managers
- One will need to have been in the last 3 months, and the other will need to have been within the last 12 months
7️⃣ Vaccinations
- You'll need to prove immunity to MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, & Pertussis.
- Your vaccination record may be satisfactory, however some states and areas may require proof of immunity through serology testing
8️⃣ Working with Children Check (WWCC)
- This essentially makes sure you are safe to work with children. This is state dependent and needs to be started before beginning your employment contract
- The agency is able to talk you through what specific website to use for that specific state
9️⃣ National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
- This is contract specific. But once you have the certification then you can use it in all states
🔟 Extras
- Although the list above is detailed to 90% of the available contracts, some agencies may require you to complete some extra paperwork
The money section
Now we've got you all set up to start your first contract! You're probably wondering how the money makes it into your account? Read below for all you need to know!
1️⃣ Tax File Number (TFN)
- Firstly you'll need a tax file number which can be applied for online (country dependent)
- This acts as a form of tax identifier to enable you to get taxed appropriately

- For all others you will require 3 forms of identification as detailed on the ATO website

2️⃣ Bank account
- Next you'll need to open a bank account
- You can do this simply by going instore to the bank of your choice
- Remember to take your ID!
- In some cases, agencies may allow you to get directly paid to a Wise account. Enquire further with your agency of choice
3️⃣ Superannuation
- Australia has incredibly generous superannuation schemes
- Your agency may have a default superannuation company but you are free to choose one that matches your financial goals
